Reasons for Not Overloading Your Site With Multimedia

The internet has changed into a vastly different entity than it was in the 1990’s. Back then, websites were made up of only a few lines of text and a few low quality images to attract attention. Eventually, it became cheaper to buy bandwidth and internet speeds rose dramatically thanks to technology such as Broadband. Webmasters also gained the ability to put more eye-pleasing features on their websites, such as dropdown menus and JavaScript information windows. This was the dawn of the internet as we know it.

Soon after the internet started growing, people learned the fundamental rule of attracting attention- people are attracted to beauty and functionality. This led to the creation of many beautifully crafted websites made specifically to grab people’s attention. Unfortunately, webmasters overused the concept, and as bandwidth became scarce, people were forced to back off from what was pretty and go with what was practical.

However, people new to the online world still think this way from time to time. This is a problem, as people will overload their sites with useless images and videos, none of which actually help to keep customers coming back after their initial visit.

A good rule for people to abide by when designing their websites is “a third of all people like to read, a third of them listen, and a third of them watch”. This promotes the use of videos and images in websites, while at the same time still limiting people from overdoing it.

Assembling a website off of this statement is simple. One must simply take videos and images that are relevant to their topic, and give brief descriptions on them to allow for people to understand what they are looking at or watching. This also allow for Search Engines to index websites, which is the primary way of drawing traffic to a site.

One must always remember that the quality of a website comes not from its beauty, but the quality of information that it provides to people. This is by far the best way to produce a popular, profitable website that will keep people coming back for more every time.
